Diecast toys were first produced prior to WWII by companies such as Meccano Ltd (Dinky Toys) in the UK and Tootsietoys in America. Not only were diecast toys very popular, but production was fast and inexpensive (after the initial tooling costs) when compared to other materials such as tinplate and wood. Initially however there were some problems, inferior zinc alloy was used which resulted in the models expanding and cracking. After WWII many other toy manufacturers such as Lesney and Mettoy in the UK and Mattel in America began to produce diecast models in vast quantities. Today most scale model vehicles produced as toys or for collectors are diecast.
